Approach

The approach of Lars Mallant and his studio can be distinguished in three phases. Phases one and two form the foundation for developing a thoughtful and unique lighting concept and cannot be separated from each other. How phase three is implemented always involves thorough consultation, where your wishes are the starting point.

Creative research

Let me start with the technical aspects. I need to know the size of the specific plot or property, whether there is a need for dimmable lighting, and if there are any legal requirements regarding the use of night lighting. It’s also essential to have a clear idea of what needs to be illuminated, such as driveways, paths, outbuildings, swimming pools, outdoor kitchens, parking areas, stairs, artworks, or perhaps a sculpture garden. I also want to know what type of electrical ground cable has been used in an existing landscape or the requirements for a new cable installation.

The second part of the research focuses on the nature around the house. I look at the types of plants and shrubs present, the trees, what is winter-proof and evergreen, the animals living outside, where the sun rises and sets. After gathering all outdoor information, we move indoors to assess the sightlines and, of course, to understand the lifestyle.

Creative concept

Based on my research, I start developing a lighting plan. I detail where each type of lighting should be placed. I exclusively use LED lighting and, if required by the environment, I also implement wildlife-friendly lighting. In the lighting plan, I indicate where the cables are laid, which is crucial for the landscaper responsible for maintenance.

Essentially, the lighting plan lays the foundation for the lighting concept that will ultimately be implemented. To bring the lighting plan to life, I conduct on-site lighting demonstrations. Depending on the landscape size, this could be in one or several locations.

Creative Direction

My clients appreciate that I remain involved in the installation process – intensively involved. For me personally, it’s essential. The difference often lies in the details, and to be entirely honest, an electrician focused on installation has a different focus than a lighting artist concerned with the overall experience. My role isn’t always the same. Sometimes, the client prefers that the regular installer works with their own landscaper on the electrical setup and landscape finishing. In such cases, I act as the creative director and installation supervisor. Other times, the client wants me to handle both the installation and finishing. To leave nothing to chance, my clients often request that I supply the lamps and fixtures. We always aim for the best quality fixtures for a specific purpose.
